Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are masters or doctoral program prepared health care professionals with advanced clinical training beyond their initial professional preparation as registered nurses. NPs are qualified to work autonomously in a variety of healthcare settings. They are able to diagnose and treat chronic and acute conditions, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe medications and other treatments, and manage patient care. NPs are licensed at the state level and must practice under the rules and regulations of the state in which they are licensed, as well as within the scope of practice of their training and certification. In the Surgical Neurology Branch the NP works collaboratively with the surgeons, research team, and interdisciplinary team to optimize care of neurosurgical patients at the National Institutes of Health.
