Kunal Goel is an IRTA Post baccalaureate fellow in the Section on Critical Brain Dynamics at the NIMH. He received a B.S. in Neuroscience at Duke University in 2016, where he assisted in research for the Neuropsychology and Biology departments. He spent his first three years developing an fMRI study that tested motor praxis learning through a virtual drawing task, which could be useful in forming novel stroke rehabilitation methods. He went on to spend his final year studying potential pathways in a Drosophila melanogaster model of the neurodegenerative disorder hereditary spastic paraplegia. His current work at the NIMH involves analyzing neuronal patterns of activation known as neuronal avalanches, which may play a role in informational processing as well as some mental disorders like schizophrenia. After his time in the IRTA program, he plans to apply the breadth of knowledge gained from these projects to future research in medical school.
