Henriette van Praag received her Ph.D. from Tel-Aviv University in 1992 for her work studying opiate receptor function. She did her postdoctoral research on the role of nerve growth factors in brain injury at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School from 1992-1997. She continued her research in brain regeneration as a staff scientist at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, where she found that exercise plays an important role in the production of new neurons in the adult rodent brain. She joined NIA in 2007. Her laboratory studies the functional integration of newly born neurons into the hippocampal circuitry using viral vectors and investigates the contribution of adult neurogenesis to learning and memory.
