Dr. Smith graduated from Jagiellonian University School of Medicine in Krakow, Poland 2007. He completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the Louisiana State University in Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, LA, in 2008, and residency in Neurology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA in 2011. He then completed a Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD 2013. The Fellowship was followed by an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Neuroimmunology and Neurological Infections at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith joined NINDS as a Staff Clinician and Head of the Neuro HIV Unit in 2014.

Dr. Smith’s field of research involves Neuromusular complications of HIV/AIDS, dementia scale as a screening tool for forms of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders, HIV-associated opportunistic infections in all the Central Nervous System (CNS), and studies related to Iong-tenn predictive value of the Framington Risk Score for ischemic stroke in HIV-positive versus HIV negative patients.
