Dr. Klein is Chief of the Section on Neuroendocrinology, which conducts research in the general area of neuroendocrinology, with special focus on the pineal gland and circadian biology. The Section is primarily interested in understanding the genetic factors that determine and maintain the phenotype of the pinealocyte. The Section also investigates the mechanisms that control 24-hour rhythms in expression of hundreds of genes in the pineal gland. Currently, Klein is using high throughput sequencing to pursue these goals in efforts involving an international team of collaborators. Dr. Klein received his B.S. degree in Zoology from Cornell University and his Ph.D. from Rice University. Before joining the NIH he did postdoctoral work at the University of Rochester.

Research Interests:
The Section on Neuroendocrinology studies molecular aspects of neural regulation, and uses the pineal gland as a model. This is a multidisciplinary program that probes the fundamental issues of mechanisms involved in the development of differentiated cells and neural control of daily changes in metabolism. The techniques used that range from protein crystallography to gene profiling to conditional gene deletion
